Being from the UK I often wonder how many of our programs make it unmodified over US screens?  I don't expect many as the ones I know of such as The Office, Cracker and others all seem to get remade for US.

So, what UK programs do you Americans get to see?

I think most of them are copied and remade (like the office, Deal or No Deal, American Idol, etc). They all get makeovers for USA TV.

Dr Who is on the SciFi channel and I think that is the same, but I am not sure.

I think you miss out because of that. How did they do with replicating the dance scene in The Office for example?

Cracker was one of the best TV series I ever watched but the US version just wasn't the same.

I have got to agree, when a comedy or a series is taken and remade for another country it ruins it altogether, I agree with the office though, if that was taken over and remade how would they have got the dance in, wasn't that a dance that Ricky Gervais made up himself and added into The Office?

What about British comedy? How does that go down with Americans?

In Belgium British TV has a very good name. It is regarded as quality TV and many British TV series are very popular.
But how American view them I don't really know - sp far those Americans I have met usualy don't know many British series or are plainly not interested. I guess I meet the wrong guys? LOL

Actaully, on PBS there are a lot of British shows that run. I don't think there are too many "current" Brit shows except for Dr Who, that has always been popular here, other shows are, keeping up apperances, faulty towers, black adder, are you being served, red dwarf, Ab Fab and a host of others on late night PBS. As far as Americans liking Brit humour theres a wide variety of tastes over here, some love it some hate. however of the ones that hate it, they do like stuff like Red Dwarf.

I guess in many ways books movies and TV shows are a product of the culture they are made in.
Many Belgian shows get 'remade' for Dutch Tv although the languages - Flemish and Dutch are much like British and US English so people could understand them. Still they do remakes. Only very expensive costume dramas aren't remade only get subtitles for those who say they don't understand Flemish... or Dutch... with is silly really but than there will always be people who will be making live difficult!

British comedy is shown a lot over here (Australia) - some british comedy is funny but a lot of it is really dry.

I guess that is the problem with comedy in generally - it is in a way very personal and some will laugh with a certian joke others may be offended or feel it is stupid!

People are not all the same so it would be impossible that we all love the same things or persons... that is perhaps the reason we need to try to be 'open minded' and try to accept others as they are.. and hope they will accept us as we are...

Generally I like British comedy but there are a few shows I don't care for. For example Little Britian what seems to be very popular (if we may believe the press away!)

i think americans adopted UK tv programs but they elevate it in a new level and fit into the american viewer's flavor.

What I feel about this is that in a way by 'making own versions' of other countries movies/ TV shows you lose a change to learn more about how other peoples thing - live - are. I like to see TV shows from different countries in their original version as it gives me a change to learn more about the country and the people who live there... I like diversity in cultures it gives some new things to discover and keep the world interested. I always compare this with what what happened in China in the 1960s when everyone had to be dressed in those horrible blue coats and pants - it was dull not fit for humans and I feel that is so for the global culture too. It is fun to live in a world full of different things and to learn about them. It is the spice of live so to speak. That is why I thing we all should try to watch someone elses original shows - even when they feel unreal or strange at first.
