Has anyone else noticed lately that the BBC's programme output isn't as good as it used to be? The only BBC programs I watch aside from News 24 [I'm a news junkie] are Neighbors and Casualty - and Neighbors isn't even made by them!

<warning: rant>
Maybe if the BBC scrapped the license fee and paid for programs using ads instead, then they would have to produce decent content to get the ratings which gets them the money! At the moment, they can put any old tosh on and if you dare not to pay the license fee [whether you have a telly or not] they'll come knocking! The other day I heard how the license fee people pestered a church for money when they didn't even have a TV on the premises!

OK, I am going to sound a little stupid here, so please don't hammer me because I just don't know about the TV situation "across the pond."

what channels do you have? We are spoiled because most cable systems have 500-900 channels. Personally in North Carolina I have 500 channels for my Time Warner cable system. That includes the local networks, movie channels (like HBO, etc) and all the other cable channels.

So I would love to learn what the situation is like in England, etc.

I have to agree with you, apart from Eastenders and Holby City and Casualty I don't bother with it, even the new comedy with Paul Whitehouse and Harry Enfield (Ruddy Hell It's Harry & Paul)  isn't all it's cracked up to be, typical of britain though charge the earth for things that are no good.

I think when they actually try they make some of the best tv out there. The Planet Earth series for instance was breathtaking but lately they do seem to churn out the same old formats. It started with the plethora of cooking, DIY and property shows they did and now there are dozens of 'talent' shows that must take all of 5 seconds to dream up.

I've read comments from the director general at the Beeb mentioning that the corporation needs to dumb down its content to cater for a majority audience and that seems to be what the problem is. Now they're not as bad as ITV yet, which is pretty much unwatchable now, but I do wish they would spend their money on quality rather than quantity.

If you're all watching Neighbours, Holby and Casualty, then no wonder you think the quality is dropping... ;)

Good point alty.

The BBC has been responsible for all the most cutting edge comedy for the past few years, for starters. The quality would need to drop drastically to get as bad as their main competitors, and using adverts would be part way to acheiving that!

I don't watch all that much TV, but usually catch a blast for 20 minutes on a morning. Assuming I can get to watch something other than Tommy Zoom or Get 100, then BBC1 is head and shoulders ahead of anything else that's available.

If you buy a regular TV set and just use a regular aerial you can receive just five TV stations, BBC1, BBC2, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel Five.

With a digital receiver you can recieve dozens more, for no extra subscription costs. Or you can buy a dish and subscribe to hundreds more.

Five if you're lucky. We get just four here (no Channel 5). And we can't get digital here either, I don't think...

Trust me, you're not missing much by not having satellite :) If it didn't have so much sport it really wouldn't be worth having.

TV Dinner....take it from me....our television is terrible........its soaps ,reality shows, quizzes, and more soaps. They can pack a Saturday night with complete dross. I live in a listed building so I am unable to have a dish.

Thats not strictly true...

Now there is cable and satellite, the choices are pretty good. We also get quite a lot of classic programs from the US too. The only problem I have is that the programming is repeated soooooo much, it’s almost annoying.
