wow - so many factors, but I guess that makes sense for safety of both the donor and the person getting the kidney. Make sure to keep us updated on what happens!

He was finally approved!!! The date is set for May 5, but now we run into financial problems. Only 80% will be covered since it is out of state. I am kind of asking for help now...Maybe from friends to help out and I'm going to get a hold of the National Kidney Foundation to see if they can help. :( UAB said that I will be billed the 20%, but I am on disability! How am I supposed to pay that?? Then if I don't, then it will ruin my credit...This is what sucks about being sick my whole life...I haven't had time to prepare for this stuff. :(

Well, I have a Paypal account that I posted a donate button to on my site HERE. I guess I could PM you the code if you wanted to put it in the left column...I also posted it on my MySpace and Yuwie...I am so lost as to what to do. I have my social worker calling people trying to get it paid for, but I don't know if that will work or not.

BTW, I didn't get anything in my Email from you...

Well, my social worker didn't help much. She said that every person she talks to tells her something different. Here is the gist of it. Medicaid will pay for out of state stuff IF it is an emergency. Some people were saying that transplant IS an emergency, but some people say that it's NOT. I am going to have to talk to Medicaid themselves to find out, I guess. I'm just starting to feel better from being sick this past week, so this is my next focus is getting a hold of Medicaid and asking them in person.

This seems like a complete joke to me. They should just do the damn surgery. You need it. Why all the BS. Can't they see that it is needed????

Bc I could live for a long time on dialysis. Transplant is an elective, not life saving...At least to them. If they were in my position it would be different. That's why spreading kidney disease awareness is a big thing us patients are trying to do. Healthy people have no clue what we go through until it is staring them in the face...And it's healthy people that control our healthcare...It's like transplant vs. dialysis. Dialysis is WAY more expensive, yet the gov will pay for it no matter how long you are on it. Transplant is cheaper and gives the person a better quality of life, yet the gov will only pay for 3 years, then you're on your own with the expensive transplant meds...Doesn't make sense...

Well, I think I may have figured out how this works. I was reading on the Florida Medicaid site the other day...It says that out of state stuff and transplants (in which case mine is a combo of both) need to be preapproved in order to be paid for. So I printed that out and plan on bringing it to my social worker to see what to do next. (Any monies that were donated towards my transplant will go towards my caregiver and donor having a place to stay while I am still in the hospital, gas, food, etc.)

Just an update, my social worker got the paperwork from Medicaid to get the transplant approved. She filled out her part and just needs my DR to sign it, then she will send it to Tallahassee for approval. So that's where I stand now.

As for the other aspects of my life, everything is going ok. I'm planning my sister's baby shower, bc my mom doesn't have time to do it. I am sticking her with food duty though, since it's being held at her house. lol. My grandmother is helping me plan it.

I'm still not talking to my sister though, but I think I may start again. I started reading this book last night that really put some perspective in my life. The book is "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff...And it's All Small Stuff." I want to live more peaceful like the book suggests, so I need to let go of the anger towards my sister. I need to just let her be right and let her have her glory, as the book states. :)

I'm trying to get William to read this book, bc he does a LOT of the stressful things in this book. I think it would help him to relax...take his mind off of the bad stuff in life, and just be happy.

I was interviewed today to be in my local newspaper. William too. They are doing it on my upcoming transplant. She wants a follow-up after the transplant too.

April is Donate Life month, so I was used to help promote organ donation. :) It will be in this weekend's paper. I will scan it and post it here for you all to read. ;)

Well, a lady from Medicaid saw the article in the paper and called me to give me her number in case I need anything or have any questions about Medicaid after the transplant. That was kind of neat. :)

Exactly one week until I leave for Alabama to get the transplant! I will probably be away for a few days...hopefully everything will go smoothly, and I'll have internet access and all...we'll see I guess! :)

Well, I have my new kidney now!!! I went into surgery May 5. It took a little longer than expected bc of me being on blood thinners, I bled a little more than they thought I would. I was in ICU for the next 24 hours so they could monitor me closely. While there my creatinine went from 6.3 to 2.5. Within the next few days it dropped all the way to 0.8, which is perfectly normal. I have never had a normal functioning kidney in my entire life!!! Bc of all the blood I lost I had to have 2 units of blood transfused. I am doing really good now though. I have been in the hospital for 11 days now. I am still here bc they haven't gotten my blood thinners straightened out yet. I should be getting out any day now though. I am in Birmingham, AL at UAB. I will be discharged to the townhouse which is right by the hospital. I'll be there for a couple of weeks, then I should be able to go back home. I can't wait to start feeling better...not be in pain anymore, and not be swollen and peeing blood. Just need to be patient. :)

*sigh* If it's not one thing with me, it's another. I was supposed to be released today, but they found a DVT (blood clot) in my leg. This is the SECOND DVT I've had in my life, and I am only 20 years old. :( Why does this crap happen to me??

I am Shay's mom. I hope that Shay and her husband to be can have a Today Show wedding that the family can go to. Shay has been through alot of medical problems her whole life, not just kidney failure. It was not easy raising Shay and her sister Alli without child support with Shay being so sick so many different times. I remember being called from the school quite a few times to come get Shay because she could not hold her head up in class due to hypoglycemia. A neighbor found Shay laying on the side of the road once that went from the bus stop to our trailer and helper her to make it home. I was a manager at McDonald's but it was hard to keep any job with as many times as I had to leave work to see about my daughter. I wish I had the money to do something really nice for her because despite all her medical problems she graduated 1/2 year early with college credits and got a scholarship even though she could not even go to school her junior year due to a DVT. I am so proud of her accomplishments. I also cannot wait to give her the car she was supposed to get at graduation. I bought it for $100.00 dollars a few years ago from my x- next door neighbor and decided to get it running and give it to Shay for a graduation gift. My boyfriend took over and it is a classic show car in the works! I will have to post a pic soon. It is beautiful and I cannot wait to present it to her.
And also, not to leave anyone out.... I have just become a grandma for the first time by my other beautiful daughter. I will have to post a pic of them also. God bless everyone and have a good day.
