Season 4 Premier - September 27th 2007

My fellow McAddicts, our long national nightmare is over. Grey's Anatomy is back after seemingly decades of reruns. Ahh…fresh start….fresh season. Who doesn’t love the first day of Grey’s Anatomy each fall? And George is back at Seattle Grace!!! And Meredith, Izzie, Christina and Alex are all residents. They are ALL the new “Nazi” with their own interns. It’s quite funny actually; it reminded me of day one on Grey’s Anatomy -- that magical time when all of this was new.

Home Room

Let’s breakdown the beginning: George is an intern -- again -- in Meredith’s group, and George's wife, Callie Torres, rules the roost of residents. Bailey holds a grudge against Torres, and I don’t blame her. She lost out her chief resident spot. Burke is gone (not just away -- but gone gone. Gone With The Wind. Gone like my mind most days…lol) McDreamy has no friends to bounce his ideas off. And the Chief is still snarky and kicking it. Izzie continues her crush on George while her interns talk smack about her “Denny History.” Oh, and did I mention Meredith’s half-sister Lexi happens to be an intern at Seattle Grace? Ten minutes in and we already have Twisty-without-the-Dark, and some patients are rushed in from a car accident.

Head of the Class

Without a doubt, George feels a bit ahead of the game compared to his fellow interns. In fact, he might as well be “Papa Intern.” Too bad Callie points that fact out -- much to his bruised-ego-dismay. Meredith’s half-sister, Lexi, reveals herself to be the girl who met Derek at the bar (Last Season).Meredith feels a bit heartbroken to learn her half-sister hit on her man. To top off her frustration, Meredith’s pregnant patient's arm was severed in the car accident and is lost. Luckily, it is hand delivered from a man and his son. In that same section of the ER, Izzie’s interns continue to lose their faith in her because she has no cases to scrub in on. And just when things couldn’t get more awkward, Izzie decides to operate on an injured deer in the back of the truck that belongs to the man and boy who delivered Meredith’s patients arm. (that’s right…a DEER)

Alex complains about having a boring patient, whom he thinks is a nut job. Torres reams him as his interns watch. During this scene, Alex’s patient ingests every metal object available. Nuts!!! In the parking lot, Izzie continues to play veterinarian. McSteamy checks out Meredith’s patient and okays the reattachment of the arm. While Meredith preps the arm, Christina laments about not seeing Burke all day; she doesn’t know about his departure. Then, the rest of the resident gang wanders into the room to talk about their crazy days. George bursts in to give Meredith a message, and then he acts like none of them are friends. He leaves as abruptly as he came in. Oh yeah, and the Chief admits to Bailey that he hasn’t moved back in with his wife because she won’t let him. A little bit later, McDreamy breaks the news to Christina about Burke, and she pretends to be fine. (Some things never change.)

Intro to Psych

Man, I forgot to mention Christina’s patient. When the man was pulled out of the ambulance, the EMT’s considered him dead. But, he was actually alive. Now McDreamy tells her that that said patient is hanging on by a thread -- literally his skull is only attached to his body by skin and muscle. Christina has to tell the man’s family to go ahead and say goodbye; however, Christina/McDreamy perform the surgery with a bit of hope. Meanwhile, Alex seeks Bailey for advice and wants to get better patients. Torres vents her frustration to Bailey a few moments later, and Bailey just shakes her knowing head. In a corridor, Izzie confronts George about her declaration of love, and he basically blows her off. She said I am stuck taking care of Bambi, George of course thinks she is referring to him and gets pisses off… (it was kinda funny) He cares more about his pain of interning again. Then the cocky McSteamy tries to give McDreamy advice about Meredith, but instead he gets told off. (You got served Steamy!)

Anatomy 101

Christina coaches a man through his surgery while coaching herself through her own pain of losing Burke for good. Izzie continues working on the deer in front of a little boy and his cynical father -- and her cynical interns. But guess what?!? Izzie gives hope to herself and the little boy once she revives Bambi. Back in the real OR Meredith and McSteamy sew their patient's arm on while George delivers the woman’s baby simultaneously. In an OR down the hall, Bailey is helping Alex operate on his patient who swallowed everything but the kitchen sink. Torres interrupts to reprimand him for paging Bailey instead of her, but good old Mama Bear Bailey sticks up for her former intern… Tells Torres in no un-certain terms that there is a REASON why Alex didn’t notify her. He was PRIORITIZING. (Lots of bitterness… cant say I blame Bailey… but here honey… have some water with that bitter pill you swallowed) Meanwhile, Lexi and George have a bit of a heart-to-heart outside the nursery. He laments his sorrows, and she laments hers. A connection is formed. She is the complete opposite of Dark And Twisty Sister Meredith.

Final Period

Chief barges into Bailey’s OR to talk about her not getting Chief Resident. She gets upset, but he basically tells her he wants her to become a better surgeon, not a better manager. McSteamy professes his love for McDreamy in a slightly homosexual way; however, McDreamy doesn’t completely blow him off, they share a laugh as they realize how it sounded…(very cute) There seems to be room for a friendship to grow back. Izzie stops being Ms. Nice Girl and tells her interns off, and I gotta say I felt good for her. Lexi gives her new friend George a boost in the intern locker room. She doesn’t tell the other interns that he has interned before. Therefore, he gets a self-esteem boost by being the best intern in the room. Christina talks to Alex about missing Burke. Meredith tries to break things off with Derek after she avoids her half-sister. But McDreamy wins her over once again and they end up doing the McDirty. Lastly, George shows up at Izzie’s door to tell her that he loves her, too.

Final Thoughts

How can they end the episode like that? Um Hello?? George tells Izzie he loves her??? WTF is THAT??? I did however cheer when the McDirty took place. That was awesome. I wanted a two-hour premiere. It went by too quickly. While I am rarely disappointed in Grey’s, I figured there would be MORE. I understand the whole – wrapping up loose ends from Season 3 before plunging head first into Season 4, but COME ON. That was not a powerful season premiere. It served its purpose, but from what I can tell from the previews for NEXT weeks show, they should have just done a two hour premiere. That would have been Mc-Frickin Amazing!

Ahhh…Grey’s Anatomy…second episode of the season, can it live up to the expectations of the first week? Picking up where we left off, a sexy Meredith and Derek are enjoying life as friends with benefits... or as they call it, S&M (sex and mockery). But Derek, like everyone else on the show on this night, is fighting an addiction that's very difficult to break.

At the hospital, the Chief makes time for his wife by “delegating,” but he can’t seem to let go of the control. George tries to confront Callie but she doesn’t have time for him. And Christina sells her wedding gifts for chances to scrub in. Poor Izzie wants a mix master (who doesn’t?!?) but apparently Izzie has nothing Christina needs. Christina gets a page and we get a fun quote, “Carnage trumps rounds.” She continues to refer to her interns as numbers - - very similar to something happening on House. Each of the residents start getting their patients from an apparent gas stove explosion. Christina gets a patient who has major issues from being in front of the stove. Ironically, Callie gives everyone patients. But she is less willing to give Izzie a patient – does she know?!? When all seems to have gone to hell in a hand basket (hurt baby, internal bleeding, stretchers full of injuries), Burke’s mother walks in looking for Christina. (Joy! Bliss!)

Christina asks Meredith to get rid of Mama Burke, and Izzie tries to hunt down George – simultaneously. So lots of Grey’s typical banter. Karev has a baby as his patient (He is SO a pediatrics doctor in the making...), and he treats the little angel so sweetly. (Awww!!! It makes me want to date Alex, if he shaved that ridiculous goatee.) In Meredith’s attempt to rid the hospital of Mama. Burke, she gets TOLD... in regards to the "It's over, it's over, it is so over” moment at the wedding, saying that makes her either insensitive or downright selfish... so "which are you?" Leaving Meredith to slink away from Mama Burke without any service to Christina. In the clinic, Bailey has Lexi and some other intern working down there, and Lexi inadvertently disrupts Bailey’s peace. Instead of the strong Grey, she now has a whiney Grey.

Another injury from the explosion involves Izzie’s patient. Callie, McSteamy and Izzie work in a room while Izzie acts quite clumsy around Callie (I personally thought this was a bit over the top... just REALLY BAD ACTING on Izzie's part.) Then Izzie tells George not to tell Callie because Izzie feels really uncomfortable around her (Um HELLO?!?!? You are STILL gonna feel uncomfortable... you are in love with her HUSBAND you A-HOLE!) They get really close to kissing, but of course, no kiss. While seeking mercy from the interns, Bailey asks Meredith to control the clinic - as a thank you for saving her life. Meredith gets the displeasure of working with her half sister. George checks a young man for internal bleeding who gets super claustrophobic in the cat scan machine. Meanwhile George freaks out over his own issues.

Alex figures out his patient (the crying baby) has issues with his blood so he doesn’t trust the baby’s father. The reason? THE BABY IS STRUNG OUT ON CRYSTAL METH!!! The husband and wife are running a meth lab, (yes a meth lab caused the explosion.) Meanwhile, George’s patient almost dies!!! Not good... just NOT good!

The Chief has Callie handle the meth lab situation while he and McDreamy work on the meth mother. Once Callie gets word about the situation; she has Alex call the police and social services while McSteamy talks to Izzie’s patient about the crystal meth lab. It’s so sad…the man looks honestly hurt that they lied to him. Callie gets upset with Bailey who took Grey away from the trauma.

Christina hides out in the clinic with Meredith. Page for Meredith. McDreamy tries to get Meredith to have lunch and she rejects him. “S & M only.” Sex and mockery. (Genius. I love it!!!)George has a heart to heart with Mama Burke, and she seems to have his marriage failures all figured out. Alex gets knocked out when he tells the meth daddy about the baby’s addiction. The dad then steals his child out of the room. (It was a NICE shot... even though I hated it for happening)

The Chief rips Callie a new one (I felt bad for her.. but hey... if you cant take the heat... give the matches to Bailey) while telling her the baby is missing and Alex was assaulted. Izzie overcompensates for her guilt by saying she thinks Callie is doing a good job. Callie seems to comprehend Izzie’s ulterior motive and kicks her out of the OR. In the clinic, Meredith patches up Alex, and Christina continues to freak out over Mama Burke.

The waiting room Christina avoids has McDreamy getting unintentional advice from Mama Burke. George’s patient is a meth addict so he has to break the news about his diagnosis. Looking through the ER, Callie starts freaking out about the baby, but clearly she masks her feelings about George’s apparent affair. McSteamy, of all people, gives her sage advice.

Lexi keeps trying to connect with Meredith, but Meredith rejects her. In fact, she rejects her wholeheartedly, saying she doesn’t want to know her. Meanwhile, McDreamy finds father and baby in the mother’s room. The baby is no longer breathing.

In the gallery over the baby’s surgery, Bailey goes on about the baby having a stroke, and she goes off on Alex. Probably the sweetest thing all episode... she is hitting him, and he says "Thank you". She says, "No.. Thank YOU" No matter how much she pulls herself away, she loves her team. (And they NEED her too!)

Lexi confronts Meredith about the crappy treatment she has received. But Meredith blames their dad for her behavior with men, and therefore, these two women can never relate, much less be related. Lexi has little response. What can she say?

George sits with his patient going withdrawal then said patient’s heart stops working. Christina talks to Mama Burke, and Mama Burke gets what she came for...the keys to the apartment. She has to collect Burke’s leftover items. Clearly, she hurts for Christina. She apologizes for Burke’s behavior. And also how Christina lost a husband and a teacher. (Which I found to be rather insulting personally) Finally, Christina asks Mama Burke to get rid of the gifts and she confirms what we all already know – Burke will not be returning.

Izzie sees George, and his patient died. Then George tells Izzie that he has to tell Callie despite the concerns. Christina sits with her patient who wakes up wondering what has happened. Through Christina’s oration, we learn the baby’s surgery went smoothly, the father/husband was taken into police custody and finally, finally (FINALLY!) Christina has some kind of bedside manner.

McSteamy invites McDreamy for a drink, and McDreamy starts to admit he has problems when it comes to Meredith. Izzie’s patient inquires after the baby, and he reveals they were like family. Later, George goes to Callie, but she won’t let him talk. She just had the day from hell, and she can’t take it. He listens to her pleas, finally walking her out. McSteamy tells Meredith that Derek will not make their “friendly” date, but McDreamy can’t let her go so he goes after her. Finally, Christina comes home to a nearly empty apartment, and she allows herself to reflect.

Cue the elevator. Lexie is giving Alex eyes as a group of interns enter and gush about how an intern totally saved a guy yesterday and how he never makes a mistake during rounds. He’s the best intern ever! It's George! Lexie convinces Alex not to blow his cover.

On a different elevator, Meredith and Derek chat awkwardly. Cristina picks up on the fact that Meredith is doing McDreamy and dodging her because of the Burke thing. She decides to use this to her advantage and con surgeries out of Mer's sympathy.
And yet on elevator 3 Izzie is waiting for George like a freakin puppy dog. When George steps off the elevator he shakes his head at Izzie, trying to let her know that he didn’t tell Callie about their McDultery.

There’s a new doctor in Seattle, and while he's got to be old enough to be our interns' grandfather, Norman is Alex's intern. This leads to some funny exchanges. They meet a patient whose mom thinks her son is on drugs because he’s lethargic, cranky and his grades have been slipping. Norman, having worked in a pharmacy for 30 years, assumes she's right.

However, the teenager’s toxicology results come back negative. Norman is shocked. That's when the kid - who insists he's clean - gets annoyed and tells is mom that she has apple hair and he threw the pancake into the river. Alex asks what he was trying to say just then and he says he wanted to go home. Alex orders a CT scan.

The chief treats a woman who has tongue cancer. She’s very talkative. Mark has to remove 60 percent of her tongue and replace it with grafts, which may make it hard for her to talk again. The Chief wants to try a procedure that would allow her to have full use of her tongue. The only problem…it has never been done before. The lady is freaking out about the prospect of not being able to talk. She says she has so much to say. George tells her to just say it if she's got something on her mind. The woman does, and she ends up hurting her friends' feelings with some personal criticisms.
The tongue surgery hits a snag and The Chief and Sloan admit they got in over their heads. They page Derek because he’s good with nerves. Derek comes in and takes over, and eventually saves the day.

Unfortunately, that’s when teenager Alex is treating decides to collapse. His pupil is blown and spinal fluid is backing up and putting pressure on his brain. Derek, while assisting Mark and the Chief, tells Alex what he must do in the next 10 minutes or the kid will die. While Alex is preparing to do the procedure - get a tongue depressor and stick it under the kid’s eyelid, then take a gigantic needle and drain the spinal fluid from behind the eye – Norman, the older-than-dirt intern, gets in the way and tries to get Alex to tell the kids mother what is going on. Alex yells at Norman, telling him to get her out of there. Alex then saves the kid. Alex apologizes to Norman for snapping at him, and Bailey goes off on Alex. She coaches him through the process in front of Norman. She says age doesn’t matter. Only pecking order matters because they are in life and death situation. Bailey reminds Alex that HE is the resident, and that Norman is the intern, and that because of the whole age thing that Alex was uncomfortable with, he almost misdiagnosed the patient.

Since Meredith gave Cristina a cool surgery to make her "feel better," she is stuck with Lexie as her intern. A trauma comes in where there has been a car accident and a patient has been down for 24 minutes. Meredith lets Lexie do her first intubation and the guy cannot be revived. Lexie freaks and calls Meredith a bad doctor, essentially. Mer tried to explain that the patient was dead before he came into the ER, but it didn’t sink in. Lexie didn’t seem to grasp the whole “you have to learn by doing” thing. There are other issues there, but whatever…Sick of her hysterics, Mer banishes Lex to the clinic.

Bailey then takes over and tells Lexie that the clinic isn’t a place for stray interns, and to go give a kid stitches. Later, Meredith gives Lexie her mother’s death note to share with her. She wants to go over it so Lex can have closure, and understand that it wasn't Meredith's fault, that it was a 1:100 chance what happened to Lexie's mom. They share a nice moment as Mer tells Lexie that she was very fond of her mother.

Callie has been hiding out doing paperwork because she can't handle the job. Bailey has been running the show. But Miranda has a heart to heart with her and tells her that she has been having trouble not being #1, so she's going to get over it and be her #2 - the best #2 ever. Together, Bailey says, they can do this and do it well. Callie smiles.

Meanwhile, Izzie is stunned when Really Old Guy wakes up and announces his name is Charlie Yost ... and that he only woke up so he could die. That's hard, though. He starts tearing cords out of the wall and unhooking the mechanisms that are keeping him alive. He stops breathing, but Izzie is able to revive him... much to his chagrin.
In between trying to end the suffering, he gives Izzie some advice. Charlie says if somebody really wants to do something, then they do it — he’ll die if he wants to, in other words, while George isn’t leaving Callie (he knew about the love triangle while semi-conscious in his coma, of course). After talking with ROG, Izzie finds George and confronts him. He says it's not about him and her, that it’s about him and Callie. He’s about to break up a marriage to a great woman and she needs to get off his back and let him do it. It’s not exactly something you just blurt out. Later, Really Old Guy is checking out of Seattle Grace. He's all dressed up and ready to go in his wheelchair. That's when he dies peacefully. Izzie brings everybody in so they can have a mini-memorial for him. After the surgeons each say some nice words, Izzie talks about how Charlie was a bastard, but a bastard who knew what he wanted, didn’t stop until he got it. Hint, hint, George.

After a moment in which Alex inexplicably blows George's repeater status in the elevator, George returns to the hotel and finds Callie on the bed with her bags packed. She tells him to just say it. Her face says she already knows the truth and that it most certainly stings. As the screen fades to black, George looks at her and says,

“I slept with Izzie.”

Okay, so it’s the next day…after George breaks the news to Callie. She remains silent. Then finally she tells him she forgives him. George seems less than thrilled with her answer, and once he gets to the hospital he frantically looks for Izzie.

Meredith makes out with Derek in the elevator who proposes a weekend away…with just sex. PUHLEASE – they are in love. Meredith needs someone to cover for her weekend shift so Alex agrees if Meredith will take his old man intern, Norman – just for the day. In the clinic, Bailey has a girl with the most disgusting ankle. She says she fell off the Stairmaster, and all she can think about is getting back to her personal trainer.

Meanwhile, Derek and Christina get an injured high school football player, and she has to remove his helmet with a bone saw. Down the hall, OMG…Callie just confronted Izzie in front of Izzie’s interns…and George hid and watched the whole thing. What a friggin’ wuss. Callie now wants to meet Izzie in the cafeteria at noon.

George gives Izzie the 411 with his “Callie convo.” And Izzie declares she will put up a fight. Derek, Christina and Lexi look over their patient’s x-rays, and Derek takes an interest in helping Lexi connect with Meredith. He even sends Christina away after she tries to send Lexi away. George, Callie and Bailey look over the Stairmaster patient’s x-rays. Callie acts totally distant, and Bailey seems concerned, but George keeps his silence.

Meredith and Norman go over how he will break the news of death to a patient. Then he tries to act like a normal intern by talking about McSteamy, McDreamy and hospital gossip…which totally weirds Meredith out, especially when he says her key line, “seriously.” She tells him he needs to rise above the gossip. Right then Christina walks by and gives Meredith the skinny on Derek’s convo with Lexi. And Meredith gets pulled back into her immature world. Poor Norman!! A few minutes later, Norman tells a woman she’s going to die. And she flips out. Not that I blame her.

Christina, Derek and Lexi go over the procedure they will be performing on the high school kid. Christina boxes Lexi out of the conversation. Izzie and Alex talk about her pending fist fight when the Chief’s niece gets rolled in – unable to breathe. Adele, the Chief’s wife, is there freaking out while Izzie tubes the Chief’s niece. Now she can breathe again. Everyone freaks out, and the chief busts into the room…quite pissed.

The Chief gives Izzie a bit of relief when he said she did the right thing with his niece. He clearly gets upset because he’s running out of options to treat her. Meredith watches as Lexi and Derek bond…and she grabs Norman to get away from it. Lexi goes to Christina to talk about their patient, and Christina yells and calls her “3” (because as we know Christina will not learn her intern’s names…only call them by numbers). Shocker! Lexi basically tells Christina that she won’t take the verbal abuse anymore. She will now be called “Lexi” or “Grey.” (Its about freakin time, but I don’t see Christina following through on orders from her intern.

Oh no! Norman read the chart wrong, and he told a woman she was dying…when in actuality the guy in the room next door will soon be meeting his demise. When Meredith and Norm go back to spread the good news, the woman is gone. She had packed up and checked out.

Izzie tells Alex that she slept with George and that’s what the fight is really about. Alex glazes with a look of hurt and disgust. His plan to help pull Callie off Izzie just hit a bump in the road. In a much sadder room, the Chief’s niece has decided to go home and die with her friends and surrounded by love. She doesn’t have any more fight in her.

The high school kid says he can’t take the pressure as his dad verbally pushes him through a medical procedure. Lexi tries to be helpful by taking the patient’s hand, but she just threw the experiment off. Christina now kicks Lexi out of the room. Derek hears the argument between father/son and resident/intern. He kicks Christina out the room calling her competitive – in a not so nice way. In the pit, Meredith continues searching for the patient who thinks she’s dying. Norman keeps apologizing to Meredith, but McSteamy only breathes down their necks. He calls them both idiots. Meredith remains calm with Norman, and suddenly he disappears.

In the cafeteria, Meredith sits with Christina as they talk about their issues as residents. Izzie comes down to join them. What she finds is that everyone knows about the showdown. She begins to prepare herself mentally. She gives herself a pep talk about her previous fights. Alex joins the table and still backs Izzie. As the door opens and Callie walks towards Izzie, each of the residents throws out their fist-fight advice.

As Izzie pulls herself together, Callie approaches …to talk. Then Callie looks around to see that everyone came downstairs to watch a punching match. She…the bigger person…walks away. Meanwhile, George runs down to the cafeteria to stop the ordeal. George bursts through the cafeteria doors and Alex strolls past George saying the fight didn’t happen. Then Alex takes a stab saying maybe the girls realized they were fighting over “nothing”. (Alex is the only person that KNOWS what happened with Izzie and George)

Callie finally stands up to someone…the Stairmaster patient’s boyfriend who apparently agreed to date her when she became a size 4. WHAT A SHALLOW IDIOT! Her bone snapped because she’s not healthy. As Callie and the boyfriend fight over her condition, Ms. Stairmaster starts spitting up blood.

In the OR, George barges into the room as Callie and Bailey operate on Ms. Stairmaster. They discuss how she let it come to that, and Bailey struck a nerve when she told them that sometimes people just don’t want to be alone. They need to be loved.

The other OR contains more medical lessons and fewer life lessons. Lexi learns something during surgery, and Christina stood at the sidelines…coaching her. I’m actually proud of Christina. She will not only be a good surgeon, but a good teacher.

Norman returns to the hospital with their “not-so dying” patient who decided to really start living. Unfortunately she quit her job. So when she hears she’ll live. She is crying - again. The Chief’s niece convinces him that she will not do the surgery. He gives her all the options in the world, but he cannot make her do any of them.

Callie approaches Ms. Stairmaster’s boyfriend to tell him that she died. Then Callie proceeds to rail on him for treating his girlfriend so badly. It gets to the point where Callie almost throws punches. But Bailey and George come to the rescue. Bailey asks Callie to spill her guts, but Callie remains tight-lipped.

On the way back into the hospital, Izzie and Callie bump into each other. Izzie apologizes for everything she did, and Callie sends her out on a rail. She breaks it down. Izzie has betrayed another woman…and there is no forgiveness for that. And there’s no forgiveness when the victim (Callie) continuously gets humiliated. Izzie stands there and takes her beating, like a real woman. A beating with no winners. An emotional beating.

Alex walks by Izzie and he tries to ignore her. Then he reveals his true emotions for her. In the past, she wasn’t ready for a relationship - after Denny. Now he finds out that she was ready for George. He’s just hurt to find he’s not the right guy.

McSteamy tells Meredith and Norman that he’s writing them up. The hospital just settled for a handsome sum with the “not-dying patient.” Meredith stands up for Norman, and McSteamy calls her stupid. Later, Adele confronts the Chief about their niece opting out of surgery. He tries to explain his duty as a doctor, but she cares much more about his duty as an uncle. She walks away disappointed in him…once again.

In the rainy parking lot, George talks to Callie about her forgiving him, and he doesn’t believe her. He doesn’t believe that she could possibly forgive him after what he’s done to her. Then she agrees with him about it. She doesn’t forgive him. And she just walks away.

Meredith runs up to Derek saying she’s ready to go away for the weekend. Then she confronts him about his conversations with Lexi. Instead of getting what she expects, Derek tells her that he wants to spend the rest of his life with her. He tells her she’s not ready…and says he’ll wait until she’s ready. Unless someone else comes along. He coolly steps into the elevator…and the door closes on them.

Lexi thanks Christina for her help…but Christina goes back to the old Christina. No compliments…no names…just numbers and orders. At the house, Izzie cries in her pillow and there’s a knock at the door…it’s Alex. He throws her a box of Kleenex. Then he tells her to keep it down. At an even more depressing house, Callie sits on her bed…alone, wet and in the dark.

Meredith is dreaming about her dead mother. Karev and Izzie are carving a pumpkin. This is the beginning of our Halloween episode.

At Seattle Grace, Callie and Bailey are reminding the doctors that this is a holiday and to keep track of their interns.

Then... it happens.

Izzie: So.. we should round before heading to the pit?

Callie: Yeah you should direct your questions to Dr Bailey, Stevens.

Cristina: Oh we're directing questions to Dr Bailey?

Callie: Oh no.. not you, just Stevens.

Bailey: Why is Stevens directing her questions to Dr Bailey?

Callie: Because she's been sleeping with my husband.

(( HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!! I almost DIED. I think I did die actually. Twice. I laughed myself stupid at least 3 times, and even when I watched it again this morning on http://www.abc.com it took me 5 minutes to stop laughing. ))

Why should Izzie direct all of her questions to Bailey now? "Because she’s been sleeping with my husband," Callie announced, in that oh-so-matter-of-fact tone that bubbled up unexpectedly. And just like that, this episode was off and running! (it was HILARIOUS!!!!)

Lexi is dressed up as a doll or something. And she gets reamed by a patient’s daughter (dressed as a mouse). Lexi neglected to give out the morning meds, and said patient is waiting for a heart so he can have a heart transplant. George comes to the rescue and coaches Lexi through the situation.

In the clinic, Bailey gets some patient who tells her that his foot does not belong to him. He wants a surgeon to amputate his foot. Of course we get Bailey’s snarkiness…which we can’t live without. Of course, she’s not going to remove this man’s foot. Later, Bailey gives him some meds to deal with his mental issue.

Derek and Meredith bump into each other, literally and Meredith drops her mother’s ashes. They share a nice moment where Mer says she is evolving. He looks somewhat impressed. Then some kid comes up looking for Dr. Sloane. Hmmm….the kid’s mother works in the cafeteria. Was there some tryst years ago? I mean this kid has to be 11.

Sloane strolls to the nurses’ station trying to be charming. The nurses have formed a club called “Nurses United Against Mark Sloane” because apparently he has used the same lines on all of them.

Derek brings the kid to Sloane, the kid looks at Sloane and says "Daddy?" Sloane nearly has a heart attack when the kid and Derek crack up laughing and Derek gives the kid a $20.

Really the kid wants Sloane’s help, he has no ears, and Sloane agrees to perform the surgery if Grey can get the staff and OR. Meredith convinces the Chief to agree after she whips out her mother’s name, and the kid comes in with a pillow case. “Trick or Treat,” he says. He’s trick or treating for ears.

In the on-call room, Ava and Alex make out. Alex pushes to go further. Then Ava calls him out. He didn’t come after her. Now she has to be the one chasing the guy. Then more talk.
Outside, George, Lexi and Izzie get a patient from a car accident (brick fell into her windshield while driving). CRAZY! It’s the mouse costume woman who yelled at Lexi for not giving her father his meds. And her injuries look super serious.

Then Bailey has a guy in the clinic that sawed off his finger. Some young guy trying to do something with a pumpkin. Apparently it was cool. Who knows…. He brought in the chainsaw so they could try to salvage his finger. But the guy with the foot problem took the saw and tried to remove the foot himself. Yes, thats right... dude SAWED his foot OFF. Yeah... it was interesting. Smart/crazy because now they have to amputate. So Crazy-Foot-Guy (CFG)wins.

Callie must now operate on the (CFG), and Christina gets stuck with him as a patient as well. Interesting pairing…Callie and Christina. Interesting pairing indeed. Callie and Sloane run into each other and discuss their personal issues. In this scene, they didnt edit it right, because it actually shows McSteamy untying his gown thing twice, but hey... whatever. (I notice little things like that)

The old man finds out his daughter has zero brain activity. The mouse woman is basically a vegetable so the Chief offers her father her heart. He is so distraught he can’t think clearly. She’s an organ donor so he could have her organs. But now that his daughter is gone, what does he have to live for?

Crazy happy Sidney runs into Derek and acts strange, even for her. She introduces herself like she’s hitting on him. It’s really weird, and Meredith watches with the earless kid. Her jealousy permeates the floor. But she concentrates on the matter at hand: finding the boy some staff to volunteer to work his surgery.
Bailey tries to get out of the boy’s surgery by telling Meredith about her Halloween plans. Her husband and she will be dressing their baby up for Halloween. But Meredith’s ploy, the little boy trick-or-treating for ears, works on Bailey. Meredith even gets Bailey to agree to get surgical nurses on board.

The old man goes to see his daughter, Erin, and he decides to let other people have her organs. But he will not be partaking. The heart will be left to someone else.

Christina and Meredith eat lunch, and Izzie and George join them. Meredith acts curious while Christina walks off in a huff. It was kinda strange…Christina seems to have alliances only to getting ahead. The matters of others never seemed to concern her before. But then again, we are starting to see different sides of Christina.

Earlier Norman had stated he didn’t feel very well. Now Alex gets paged. Too bad he’s in a bunk bed with Ava. And they are naked. Her pillow talk includes discussing her daughter. Alex passes out, and Ava lets him sleep.

Dr. Hahn (last season, heart patient war with Burke…jogging your memory?) shows up to harvest Erins heart, and Izzie and Christina vie to scrub in the surgery. Izzie gets chosen because Dr. Hahn thinks Christina sleeps her way up. (kind of uncalled for, but the writers must know what they are doing)

Now Dr. Hahn talks to the old man about letting his daughter go and taking her heart. The old man refuses the heart yet again. However, when Dr. Hahn leaves, George gives him a “pep talk” (Your daughter would want you to do this, I would want my father to do it if I could... etc...) and the old man agrees to take her heart.

Izzie confronts Christina’s judgment. They have it out. Izzie says that Cristina did the same thing she did. Cristina denies this, saying that her having sex with her boyfriend is NOT the same as Izzie sleeping with a married man. Izzie points out that Meredith slept with a married man (Derek) and THAT was "okay." Izzie tells Christina that Meredith and Christina have a little circle. Anything that happens in the circle is okay, but if someone else makes a mistake…they get scorned.

Sloane has gotten Derek back by telling crazy, happy Sidney that Derek’s on the market and "lookin". Too funny! Derek scares Sloane with a possible child…and Sloane gets him back with putting him on the market.

Callie and Christina bond over the amputee surgery and Norman stands there at a loss. He looks like he could be in pain. The girls keep giggling about their personal problems. Then Norman passes out right there in the OR.

Alex wakes up from his post-coitus nap. He sees his pages and rushes out. He goes into the OR where Derek is operating on Norman. AND NORMAN COULD POSSIBLY DIE! Alex clearly feels horrible. Actually there seems to be no words to describe the way Alex looks. Luckily, Norman lives. Yay Norman!!

Lexi and George watch the surgery where the old man gets his daughter’s heart. And Meredith works on the little boy with Sloane in another OR. Very cool surgeries today.

Meredith and Lexi run into each other outside their respective OR’s. Lexi heard that Meredith brought her mom’s ashes to work. So Lexi revealed that she dug up her mom’s dead cat and reburied the cat next to her mom’s grave. Meredith simply says “thanks” and they go their separate ways. Oh the slow bonding of sisters. Sometimes only family can relate to your strange behavior.

Bailey is on the phone in the parking lot talking to her husband Tucker. He’s irate that she didn’t come home for their baby’s first Halloween. Poor Bailey. George comes outside, and they discuss George’s infidelity issues. He apologizes for disappointing Bailey. But then she gives him a bit of a reprieve by saying he’s not a bad person. Through this convo, Bailey discusses the issues within her marriage. Her dedication to the job makes her a bad person…despite her selfless acts as a doctor.

Dr. Hahn will now be the Head of Cardiothoracic Surgery. And it’s announced right after Christina has given her a piece of her mind. Too funny. Christina then revokes her apartment offer to the Chief, which she had given to him that morning.

Alex goes to Norman to apologize. But Norman tells Alex that he only went into the surgery internship because it was as if his deceased wife Marybeth was "in his ear" telling him to do so. He thinks she wanted him to be near surgeons because he was going to have a stroke. After the stroke has happened, he will go into a psych program because he’s sick of the crazy sex, emotions and other things the Seattle Grace’s surgery team encounter.

Everyone goes their separate ways. Even though Alex promised he would come back for her, the only thing left of Ava is her shirt. Alex goes back to the room, and all he has left of her is that shirt. So he smells the one thing he has left. Izzie and George call it a “bad day.” And hold hands. They seemly truly in love…in friendship love. (I dont see PASSION there...)
In a messy apartment across town, Callie has moved in with Christina. If there were ever a dynamic duo…that’s it. Callie asks to clean up and Christina says “NO.” Dear, oh, dear we are going to have some laughs soon.

The Chief walks in on Meredith doing something in a sterile room. Then we realize Meredith is doing something with her mother’s ashes. In fact, she is washing her mother’s ashes down the drain where the surgeons wash their hands pre-surgery. At first, the Chief seems weirded out…and then he joins her. Meredith’s right, if her mother wants to be anywhere, it would be right there.

The Chief is feeling the need to spice things up. We're talking about guys night out. Now crashing at Derek's trailer in the wilderness and not keen on eating fish for breakfast, the Chief suggests to Derek that they have a "gentleman's evening" to take their mind off of their troubles. A little uncomfortable with that concept, Derek convinces Mark to come along for backup. This should be good.

Meredith tells Cristina that she can't sleep anymore without nightmares and panicking. Cristina tells Mer that she has severe abandonment issues, and suggests she quit having the sex with Derek. (Obviously Cristina has forgotten who she is dealing with.)

The more Derek makes himself available, the more she pulls away. Mer tells us as much. But she makes another sex date in the call room with him later that day anyway... (not that any woman can blame her, I mean... come on...)

At the hospital, Izzie watches George sleep and snore in the on-call room. Izzie thinks it's absurd they aren't having sex yet. She wants to have hot, perfect sex, tonight.

Two women arrive after getting into a fight over a wedding dress. They were engaged (in more ways than one) in a contest where each has to hold onto a dress for as long as she can, and the last to let go wins $100,000 towards a wedding. Mark tells George to be a proxy, holding the dress while Callie treats one of their shoulders... so he spends most of the day holding onto a torn, bloody wedding dress. That's symbolism for you!

George and one of the brides-to-be are still holding onto the dress when she faints. George and Richard operate on her and after saving her, and in a nice moment, the Chief praises George for being tough and not buckling under the humiliation that Callie and McSteamy doled out earlier.

Another patient named Rick, is brought in after skydiving and a parachute didn't open, causing him to fall 12,000 feet but sustaining only a ruptured appendix as he happened to land in shrubbery. You'd think that such a crazy medical case would appeal to Cristina, but she wants to switch patients and give Izzie the skydiver because Izzie - who Yang says isn't tough enough for cardio - is helping Dr. Hahn with Mr. Arnold.

A problem arises as Hahn can't get the stent into Mr. Arnold's artery, but can't open him up either because he's allergic to the anesthesia. Cristina, trying to get into Hahn's good graces, does research and finds that they can do the open-heart surgery while he's awake, giving him an epidural to numb him. Hahn agrees to the surgery - but Dr. Hahn still picks Izzie to assist.

Alex finds Lexie hiding in a closet from Cristina. Alex gets her to help work on the blonde would-be bride, who refuses to have surgery to fix her shoulder. Lexie convinces her to go through with the surgery by telling her that she's going to have a hunchback otherwise. A fairly compelling reason.

The shoulder surgery also goes well, but the first thing she asks after she wakes up is if she won. Callie bitches her out and tells her to let it go. In a moment obviously stemming from Callie's own struggles, she says that if she has to fight that hard for a wedding, it's not worth it.

Mark and Derek hang out outside the trailer, worrying about what to expect of their "Gentlemen's Evening." Richard arrives to explain that a gentleman's evening is simply an evening enjoyed by gentlemen, without any ladies. Of course, it's not happening because Dr. Hahn shows up to ridicule them and their old boys' club. The four spend the night playing monopoly. Awesome.

Lexie asks Alex what he's doing tonight. He bluntly tells her that the only thing she's ever going to get from him is sex, and that's not enough for a girl like her. He says he's not a nice guy, won't call her the next day, best of all, he's still not over someone else. At least he's up front.

Izzie and George are about to have sex, with candles everywhere, but she starts crying and says she's so exhausted after spending six hours doing surgery. George says his hand is killing form holding the dress all day. Surgeons' lives require sacrifices each and every day, it seems.

Meredith says that you have to give yourself permission not to be hardcore sometimes. She and Cristina snuggle in bed together and she tells Cristina that it's not about the sex, but she can't stop seeing Derek. For whatever reason she feels safe with him and she's not ready to give that up.

Then she gets out of bed to find Lexie and Alex, half-naked and fooling around in the hallway. (You know that's not going to go over well.)

(All in all, not a very impressive episode... but a slow week is allowed occasionally)

It's all about chemistry. You either have it or you don't. In trailer land, Derek is starting to wonder what he got into... with the Chief. Richard is dropping off his dry cleaning with Derek and also making plans to watch The Godfather with him later. Mark jokes that Derek and Richard are dating.

Richard tells Callie that, as chief resident, she needs to clean up her act. Callie asks Bailey to cover her and be chief resident for the day because she has back-to-back surgeries and, well, Bailey's better.

Dr. Erica Hahn wants Meredith for her service to see if she inherited Ellis' chops. But she's interrupted by George, who confides in Mer that sex with Izzie is horrible. She's trying to channel a porn star and it just isn't working. Moments later, Izzie finds Meredith alone and complains that George kisses like a chicken!

Alex's patient, Jerry, hasn't had a bowel movement in five days, while Dr. Yang, having been ousted from cardio by Dr. Hahn, treats a woman, Teresa, who fell down the stairs while carrying her baby, and suffered some mild head trauma. The baby is still breathing, but Teresa faints and can't. Her husband, Sean, confides that they only recently adopted the baby and she doesn't even have a name yet.

Dr. Hahn and Meredith operate on Teresa as Cristina and Mark watch from the gallery. Both of them are jealous at this moment - but are in love with Dr. Hahn. Cristina wants to be her understudy, while Mark repeats over and over that he has a thing for the new head of heart surgery.

At home, Izzie and George try again, but it goes worse than ever. There is more pecking, overly rough behavior and even some fantasies better left unfulfilled. George thinks he chipped a tooth!

Alex's and Izzie's patients are causing them consternation, and Lexie (who has taken over the baby) joins them in looking for Callie to help, but it is Bailey who tells them what to do and then covers for Callie in front of Richard. Lexie's problem isn't exactly solved, because Sean tells her that he can't raise a child on his own and that doesn't want to keep her.

The boy who swallowed marbles to make his parents take him seriously now comes back to the hospital after having swallowed more ... except this time, they are magnets, which are ripping through his stomach and organs and must be operated on ASAP.

After their shifts, Meredith and Derek have sex in Derek's trailer, but he forgets that he was supposed to have dinner and a movie with Richard. So the Chief walks in on them of course. Meredith goes home to find Alex hanging out outside of the house because Izzie and George are inside, trying to have better sex with the help of a "box of fun" and booze (which doesn't work, it's worth noting).

Lexie comes over to ask Alex to have a drink at Joe's. Meredith rips into her and tells her she's not allowed to have drinks with Alex or sleep with Alex, and to get her own life and her own friends. Lexie tells Meredith to screw herself, while Alex asks Mer why she cares so much if she doesn't even consider Lexie to be her sister, as she has said in the past.

Alex and Izzie find their patients - who Bailey had them put in the same room to annoy each other and make them focus on getting better and going home - having sex with the curtains drawn. Izzie says it is unfair that even this odd couple have chemistry when she doesn't with George.

Mark tells Derek that he has a thing for Dr. Hahn. Richard joins them to have a "lovers' quarrel" with Derek. The conversation makes Richard see that Bailey has been doing all of Callie's chores and making Callie's decisions for. Richard catches up with Callie and demotes her.

Lexie sits with Sean when Meredith comes out of Teresa's surgery. Meredith tells the man that some people just need more time to bond with the baby and to feel like a family. Lexie is sitting there and takes these words to heart regarding her own life as well. Hahn and Meredith patch up Theresa's lungs, but there are too many leaks and she doesn't make it.

Lexie finds Alex and asks him to meet her in the on-call room. He says he can't because he doesn't want to get involved with Lexie's problems with Meredith. But when Sean - who had left the hospital after his wife died, abandoning the baby - returns and names it Keisha, Lexie feels a renewed sense of hope that she should go after Mer and make it work.

Richard tracks down Bailey, outs her for doing all of Callie's work, then credits her for all she has done and admits he should have made her Chief Resident from the very beginning. She says that it's about time that he noticed, and then bursts into tears. She throws her arms around him.

After rounds, Lexie finds Meredith and tells her five things about herself, in hopes of making her older half-sister know her better. Later, Lexie is at Joe's and feeling miserable. Meredith asks Alex if he would please take poor Lexie home. Alex drives Lexie home to find Thatcher drunk off his ass. Alex gets in his face when he wants to drive to the store, which irritates Thatcher. Lexie asks Alex to keep this a secret.

Callie comes to find Cristina painting after a day of not getting what she wants. Callie confides in her that she got fired. At Joe's Mark tries to put the moves on Dr. Hahn while playing darts but is completely, utterly shot down. Richard tells Derek that he married Adele two years out of college, and doesn't know how to do things. Meredith at last wants to stay a little while after sex with Derek.

Izzie and George go at it yet again... and confess how great it was. They do have chemistry after all......Then they call each other out for lying.

Meredith talks about growing up, and they are all at Emerald City Bar. As in The Wizard of Oz. Too clever…sometimes this show just gets too clever for its own good. At the Emerald City, Derek is on a date with Sidney…the nut job resident from a bit this season and tons from other seasons. Sloane runs over to get the skinny while Meredith and Christina sit at a table across the way dissecting the situation. Meredith compares the date to a football player kissing the nerdy, nervous girl. Too funny…this episode clearly surrounds our child-like behavior.

Bailey posts her new title on the bulletin board and proceeds to dance around. Pretty much like a girl that got asked to the prom. But all good dancing must come to an end, and it ends for Bailey when she bumps into another hospital employee.

Elevator. Izzie and Derek on board. Hospital floor outside elevator. George and Meredith chat. Elevator door opens, and George and Meredith run away. Children, children. Then they hash out why they are avoiding their significant others. Well their “kinda” significant others.

Callie acts like a bigger person to say how happy she is for Bailey about Chief Resident. Bailey acts very sweet and demure. Then Sidney comes up and ruins the moment.

As Bailey begins her reign as Chief Resident, she starts the day with a lecture. She tells them how love lives have no place in her new palace. She wants everyone to grow up. No sex in the on-call room. She wants this place to run like a hospital, not a college dormitory. While she states all of her new rules, Izzie talks to Meredith about her issues with George. Eventually, she gets caught by Bailey and Bailey’s points have been made.

Christina begs Bailey to be Hahn’s resident. Bailey agrees as long as Christina does not embarrass her. When Christina finally gets a chance to strut her stuff, she spouts a million pieces of information about a patient. Hahn tells Christina to take notes from Izzie. Izzie lets her interns have a chance, and she still knows she’s a good doctor. Christina is just trying to hard to be the best of the best. She just needs to be herself…like she was when Burke was around.

Per usual, emergency situation arises where all our lovely residents will get a patient. This time it’s a student bus crash. The first patient out goes to Callie and Alex. She’s a vain girl who keeps shouting that she wants to see the head of plastic surgery.

George gets a patient who knows Bailey. He’s the person taking the kids on a bus to tour various colleges. Bailey gets super excited when she realizes the guy in the stretcher is her high school friend, Marcus.

Derek and Izzie get a guy with a pencil in his eye. Derek examines the Danny (pencil in the eye), and he decides his course of surgery.

Bailey gives stitches to her friend, Marcus. She’s borderline flirting with him. George sees this and he tries to take over. George tries to get the flirting to cease. Bailey clearly has an interest in hanging out with this guy. She sends George to do paperwork after a simple please from Marcus. Now this is not the Dr. Bailey I know. She’s rough, and she’s tough. Men listen to her…she doesn’t swoon.

Sloane, Alex and Callie talk to the vain girl. She’s a pom-pom girl and all she cares about is getting her face fixed in time for her pom-pom competition. But Callie delivers the bad news: she broke her butt and fractured some other bones. Now there will be no way for the pom pom queen to dance in the competition. Sloane seems to love this patient. He had a perfect teenage experience – he was a football player.

Alex gets paged about a man who cut his hand by punching in a window. The guy is Meredith’s dad. The Chief hears what’s going on. And Meredith’s dad keeps yelling to get Dr. Grey. So Alex goes to find Lexi while the Chief attends to him.

Bailey breaks her own rules to help her old friend. Hahn examines Marcus, and finally has to break up the giggling. She can’t even hear Marcus’ heart. Finally, Hahn says he’s fine, and she calls Bailey a “blithering idiot.”

Alex grabs Meredith. He tells her she should go work on her dad. She tries to avoid the situation by pushing it onto Lexi. No luck because Lexi has already rebuffed Alex trying to talk to her. Meredith eventually hears good ole pops shout for her. He seems overjoyed to see her. And Meredith seems stressed...go figure.

Meredith works on her dad, and he apologizes for treating her like crap the last time they met. He said he’ll regret it until the day he dies. He laments the death of Susan (his dead wife), and how today is her birthday. Meredith begins to form a connection with her father while she works on his bloody hand.

While Danny gets a cat scan, Lexi talks about the kid with the pencil in her eye. Then she talks about being valedictorian and prom queen. Her high school experience gave her no character. Izzie tells Lexi not to broadcast her superior high school experience. Derek runs into the room and they decide the poor kid will need an operation. They will need to remove the pencil (obviously), but he has bleeding in his brain.

Bailey and George talk about her relationship with Marcus. At first, she tries to brush it off. She used to tutor him. They spent time together studying. Finally, she admits hopes to attend the homecoming dance with him, but it didn’t work out.

Hahn, Sloane and Chief eat lunch. And Hahn notices that Sloane has attracted the attention of teeny boppers. Then he says he has had the same affect on girls that age since he was in high school. He invites the girls over, most likely to stroke his ego. But instead they tell him that he looks like one of the girls’ fathers. Hahn and the Chief get quite a chuckle, and Sloane now must swallow his vain pride.

Christina and Callie eat their lunch together. Callie watches Izzie and George in the lunch line together. Christina wants to make her friend feel better so she shares a bit of gossip, which she heard from Meredith. George and Izzie are no more. Callie gets really excited about the news. Not overly so, but I think it makes her feel a bit better. Gossip in the lunch room, what gets better than that?

The vain pom pom girl gets bad news, one of her fakish friends will be taking over as pom captain while she heals. She has to act happy as her friends shallowly dissect her situation. Maybe she’ll get a date to the dance; maybe no one will laugh at the fact that she broke her butt. After Callie sends them packing, pom pom queen says her life is over.

Danny talks on his friend Marissa’s phone while he gets wheeled towards the OR. Lexi and Izzie wheel him down the hall while Marissa walks by his side. Eventually the phone dies. The teens cope by joking around. Marissa says she won’t survive junior year without him so he must survive.

Derek and Izzie talk about cliques while they perform Danny’s surgery. Derek talks about how much they’ve grown since those days. A nurse laughs saying that the hospital is clique-y so they haven’t come as far as Derek has imagined. After the pencil is out of Danny’s eye his artery bleeds and his brain expands. Trouble in paradise.

Derek talks to the Chief about Danny. Apparently he’s going to be a coma permanently. Danny’s friend, Marissa, can’t hear the news until his parents get there. Derek feels horrible, but he has to tell her that Danny is still asleep. It’s really sweet how sad Derek seems about the whole situation. He understands the importance of best friends the way Izzie does.

Callie, Sloane and Alex work on the vain pom-pom girl. Callie busts Sloane’s chops about being told he looks like a teenager’s dad. Then Sloane says Callie’s just happy because Izzie and George “hit the skids.” So now Alex knows which means almost anyone could know after this surgery is over.

Christina acts like a real kiss up with Hahn. She brings Hahn a bunch of scans dealing with Marcus’s heart. Hahn gets annoyed because she doesn’t think she’ll need those X-Rays. Christina is just wasting her time. After Hahn walks away, Callie walks over to coach Christina. She says that Christina needs to act a little less anxious, and then maybe Hahn will give her more of the praise she desires.

Meredith continues working on her dad. He says he missed seeing her high school day. His drunken giddiness cracks me up. They finally have a chance to bond. Unfortunately the man is three sheets to the wind. However, some time mending is better than no time at all.

Derek sits outside looking very upset about Danny. Meredith strolls over and asks about his date with Sidney. She talks to Derek about her dad, and how she likes her drunken dad better than her regular dad. Derek sadly says he does not look forward to breaking the horrible news to Danny’s friend. He’s sad for Danny, but he’s even more upset for Marissa.

The interns gossip around a computer…are they blogging Seattle Grace gossip? They talk about Izzie and George being done. Poor Izzie. She overhears the interns and gets more upset about their situation. She finds George and instead of confronting him, she automatically asks for him to return her house keys. George asks what’s going on, and they both realize they told Meredith their problems. They’ve both been talking to Meredith instead of each other. The fearsome twosome seems more fearful than before.

Lexi gets upset when she sees Meredith with her father. She blows up at Alex about how she asked him to promise not to share her father’s alcohol issues.

Bailey’s friend, Marcus, keeps saying he admires her. Yet there she is filling out his forms. George keeps trying to protect her, but she’s in this knee deep. Finally, the Chief catches her filling out his forms. He starts reaming her about her doing a patient’s paperwork instead of her real work. Then Marcus starts to have heart issues, and he looks like he may be having a heart attack.

Derek gives Marissa the bad news. He holds her while she cries and all the other students look over and know what has happened.

Meredith goes to see Christina, and she says she’s getting coffee for her and her dad. She looks so happy. I’m glad they finally can work out their issues. Everyone deserves one parent in their life. Instead of sharing in the happiness, Christina freaks out about Hahn’s surgery occurring without her. Christina reveals she never cut one class.

Hahn, George and Bailey work on Marcus. Bailey begins to get angry with Hahn. Then Hahn gets snappy right back with her. Hahn should have been more thorough, and Bailey should have diagnosed the problem without Hahn.

Izzie coaches Marissa through the loss. They both can relate to being outsiders. Marissa thinks Izzie was some kind of prom queen, but as many of us know, she was from a trailer park. She wore crappy clothes and got pregnant in her teens. Miss Popularity was not exactly her title. Finally, the two other girls standing in Danny’s room keep patting themselves on the back for the good deeds they will do in honor of Danny. Tragedy makes teenagers reach out to one another. But it’s hardest on those who cared originally. These two girls have lost nothing, and Marissa has lost everything. Finally Izzie yells at the girls and forces them to leave.

The nurse who talked about cliques happens to be a total hottie. She walks up to Derek and says hello. He doesn’t recognize her nor does he know her name. She totally calls him out on his frat boy behavior.

Pom-pom queen and Callie have a bit of a heart-to-heart. Callie relates her recent demotion with the pom-poms girl’s loss of being capitan. She tells her that losing the Chief Resident position allowed her to go back to doing what she loved. Before the job was a lot of work, and now she can just enjoy what she loves most.

Christina gets a page from Hahn while lying down on a bench in the on call room. She flings herself out the door, but then she slows her pace. She pushes herself to have some restraint, but eventually she runs. She opens the OR, and Dr. Hahn inadvertently admits that she should have looked at the x-rays Christina had brought her. Christina walks away from the room to get those x-rays, and she has a huge smile on her face.

Meredith talks to Lexi about their dad. At first, she tries to relate how great her day was. She understands their pain, but Meredith then lectures Lexi about keeping a better eye on him. Lexi’s hurt so she reacts with her first instinct. She yells at Meredith. She calls their father a liar and says he only treated Meredith like a princess because of the booze. She’s upset about their bonding. But she’s also venting her frustrations and taking it out on Meredith. She has no parent, and when she finally feels a connection, it’s ripped from her.

The Chief sits with Meredith. He tells her he promised her mom that he’d take care of her. Meredith doesn’t want him to keep such a close watch, but he wants to keep his promise. Finally, some father figure to act like an adult and give this girl a chance. Meredith’s whining gets on my nerves, but everyone deserves a parent who loves them.

In a recovery room, Marcus wakes up. Bailey seems delighted to see him awake, and he grabs for her hand. George leaves the room when they start talking intimately. Marcus asks her to finish filling out his paperwork. She becomes that giddy school girl again, and she apologizes for not finishing the paperwork for him. George rolls his eyes while standing in the doorway. As Bailey leaves the room, George tells her that Marcus deserves a long speech for taking advantage of her. Instead Bailey walks away with her tail between her legs.

The elevator door opens and Lexi walks in. Too bad for her Alex is already in there, and now they have to be alone after their little tiff. Alex tells Lexi he doesn’t keep secrets, he thinks they are juvenile. She says this was a family situation. Alex reveals that his father was a drunk too so he doesn’t really feel too sorry for her.

Derek says goodnight to Bailey. Then she tells him to sit down. She gets nasty mean with him. She uses him to give the lecture she should have given Marcus. I feel her pain a bit. Today she saved her friend’s life, and he still doesn’t see her. Finally she gets her release. Venting her high school issues causes Derek to talk about his own high school experience. Both of them happened to be in band, and both of them were overlooked. The friendship they have makes me really happy. They both seemed to be pretty evolved grown up people…who run into childish situations more often than not.

Izzie gets home and George is sitting on a bench waiting for her. He says he talks to Meredith because he can’t seem to talk to Izzie. Izzie reminisces about the times they were best friends and they could talk about anything. They both say they want their best friends back.

Derek chases down the snarky nurse. He calls her name, “Rose.” And he apologizes for not knowing her after today’s surgery. And Rose basically tells him how it is. She has worked on over 30 surgeries with him, and he just now has tracked down her name. In fact, today is the first day he made eye contact with her. She tells him to have a good night. Then Sloane walks over and says Derek knows how to get back on the horse.

The boys go to get drinks. Sidney walks over and talks to Derek. She grabs his hand. And man is she straight forward. She tells him that he’s not ready to be “her guy.” Talk about an easy out. Derek watches Meredith from afar. He walks over and the two of them leave together. Rose raises her glass to Derek as they leave. And he seems shocked to have the eye contact.

Cristina is dancing. Meredith seems to be contemplating, possibly about Derek. Yang tells Meredith to dance with her so there are the BFF’s dancing like fools and Izzie happens upon them. And Izzie gets a pissy look and walks off.

Izzie goes to George saying they should be the ones dancing together happily. But now she is going to study under Hahn and become the best cardiothoracic intern there is, even if Cristina hates it. Bailey and husband start fighting over dishwasher. But really all he’s upset about Bailey being from midnight to 6 am. And now he has to be the house husband. Bailey works it out so they will meet at lunch to discuss their problems. All other hours just never work for them.
