The Pilot :  Airdate 5/3/2007
"She's gone."

That's all Richard Webber has to say about Addison Montgomery's presence (or lack thereof) at Seattle Grace Hospital. At a personal breaking point, the renowned neonatal surgeon taken a leave of absence from her employer and is cruising down California's Pacific Coast Highway in a classic red convertible when we first see her.

When Addison arrives in L.A., stop #1 is Oceanside Wellness Center, where she gets in the elevator along with a hot guy gets in with her. Naturally, she bursts out laughing uncontrollably and explains to him how back where she's from, in Seattle, elevators make people horny.

The gentleman, who we soon learn is alternative medicine specialist Peter "Pete" Finch, thinks she's hot... albeit possibly insane.

But she's not in town to talk about horny elevators in Seattle... and least not entirely. Addison made the trip to see her old friend, Naomi Bennett, from medical school. Addison gets a lot of flak for not staying in touch, and is shocked to learn that Naomi - just like her - is recently divorced from her hot, successful doctor husband, Sam.

And, like Addison and Derek Shepherd at Seattle Grace, Sam works right along side Naomi at the Oceanside clinic.

Addison confides to Naomi that her SoCal journey is not just to rekindle old friendships, but to get pregnant. She wants a baby, and Naomi happens to be a renowned fertility specialist. It's just a matter of picking out the sperm donor and Addison is ready to embark on the amazing journey we call as motherhood.

She soon meets the rest of the staff at the Oceanside Wellness Center, an eccentric but friendly group. In addition to Sam (also her old friend), Naomi and Pete, there's...

Pediatrician Cooper Freedman, who's a bit socially awkward and prefers online dating (of really young girls who possibly rob him).
Psychiatrist Violet Turner, who worries her efforts are all in vain, and who just got out of a long relationship to a man we learn is now married.
Receptionist and resident hunky young surfer dude Dell.
These people have issues, but that's old hat to a Seattle Grace physician.
Speaking of crazy ensembles, a pregnant woman, Lisa, shows up with a group of five people. Lisa was artificially inseminated as a surrogate mother for another woman, Carol. Lisa slept with Carol's husband after undergoing the procedure, though - as well as with her ex-husband... and another guy. A case like that makes determining paternity a problem.

The bigger problem, though, is that Lisa hasn't received prenatal care. As Addison examines her, she learns she has a life-threatening condition, for both her and the baby. Lisa takes comfort in the visiting doc's care and asks her to stay in Los Angeles until she delivers the child.

Addison agrees, but soon after, receives a devastating blow in learning that her own odds of becoming pregnant via artificial insemination are virtually non-existent. For Addison, a baby is about changing her life - taking control, revitalizing herself. When she gets the news, she falls apart, spiraling into a depressed, confused mess.

It's a good thing Naomi and Violet show Addison how to get over their bad moods at work - by waiting in the lobby until 12:55, when Dell rolls out with his surfboard (and washboard abs), ready to hit the beach. Hey, so what if he's old enough to be their kid. The ladies ogle away with joy.

Later, Addison and Pete begin flirting, despite her cracks at his specialty in herbal remedies. He tells Addison to lie down so he can prove he’s not a quack. Addison is skeptical about the acupuncture he gives her, saying that there is no way it’s going to release her tension and lead to a rush of emotions, as Pete claims.

A few minutes later, she’s got needles in her face and is sobbing and proclaiming that she hates L.A. and everything about her life.

Lisa goes into labor and is rushed to the hospital. They deliver the baby safely, but something in Lisa’s uterus ruptures. Addison saves her, but becomes livid with the gaggle of possible parents, who all want to know what the paternity test turned up, rather than if Lisa's okay.

Later, Lisa gives the baby to Carol and Doug, which seems to be the right choice, though the paternity of the child is never revealed.

The doctors comment on how this baby will have two moms and three dads, and unconventional as it might seem, they all look like a family. Sam touches Naomi’s arm. He was never unfaithful to her. He just woke up one day and decided he couldn’t be married to her anymore. But now he's very clearly regretting that decision.

After everything she's been through from Seattle to L.A., Addison has yet another breakdown, and is found by Pete as she's crying in the stairwell.

She tells him he’s not allowed to flirt with her, as she is all dried up and past her prime. Pete begs to differ. “I’m gonna kiss you. I’m gonna kiss you with tongue," he says. "I’m gonna kiss you so you feel it.”

They share a steamy embrace, which he says was to remind her that she’s not all dried up. He departs, leaving her breathless and.

As Addison heads home to Seattle, she does so with an invite from Naomi to come back and fill that empty office they've got there at Oceanside. The wonderful Dr. Montgomery may be driving back to Seattle in her sexy red convertible for now, but she's already found her new life in California, and it's only a matter of time until she returns.

As the opening credits roll, Addison is still in the Seattle Grace OR, where she is confronted by Richard about the resignation letter she left for him. She tells him her decision to move to L.A. is final and tells Richard a little about the people at Oceanside she got to know.

It's a world of difference from what she remembers, though. After a happy morning dancing naked in front of the window - and surprised next door neighbor Sam (that's what happens when you use the guy's Realtor) - she goes to her first day of work.

That's when we learn that Dr. Naomi Bennett, who owns 55 percent of this Private Practice, hired her without consenting any of the other "family" members. They are none too pleased to learn about this hire, despite Dr. Montgomery's incredible charm and talent.

There are medical emergencies that put the internal strife on the back burner for now, though. When a woman's older fiance dies of a heart attack when trying to produce a sperm sample so they can have kids, she asks for his sperm to be extracted after he's gone.

The problem? Dr. Charlotte King, at the nearby hospital upon which the co-op members often depend, is not buying it. Nor is the man's wife. Yes, he was married for 17 years before he left her for the younger woman and now she wants the sperm. Or at least for the young woman not to get it.

Eventually, however, after some cajoling from Naomi, Charlotte allows them to do the procedure if the hospital isn't liable. Then Naomi convinces the widow of the man to let him go, since he was clearly interested in having a baby with the younger woman and that's pretty much all there is to it. She concedes, and the doctors are able to get the job done.

Along the way, we learn a little about Sam and Naomi, as the woman in this case makes Naomi think about the way he left her. He says he wasn't happy and wanted to see her fight for once. She didn't, leaving him no choice but to go his own way. Still, there are signs of hope for these two yet.

Violet, meanwhile, finds one of her patients in a camping / sporting goods store, crawling on the floor and obsessively counting the tiles, possessed by some inner turmoil. With the help of Cooper, who helps her, she learns what set the woman off - a TV ad triggering a memory of her dead son - and is able to talk her back to reality. It's sad and touching and the bond of friendship between Cooper and Violet is clearly shown.

Back at the co-op, Dell complains that Addison doesn't take him seriously, that all she sees is a surfer boy when he is studying to be a midwife. He gets a chance to prove his skills soon enough when a young, pregnant girl named Lucy goes into labor at the hospital - then has complications and must have an emergency C-section before they can get her out of there.

Via acupuncture, Pete somehow makes it so Lucy won't feel pain, since they have no access to anesthetic. Addison operates and saves the day while Dell assists. The baby is fine, and Lucy nearly falls into cardiac arrest but Pete is able to revive her. All in a day's work at Oceanside!

Now that all that's taken care of, the doctors confront Naomi and want to take a vote on whether Addison stays. Naomi agrees, but Dr. Montgomery is not having it, proclaiming that she's here to stay and going to make this her life. She had one patient today, she says, and she saved her life. If that doesn't prove her worth, what does?

Impressed, the doctors welcome their new partner. Addison goes home... and this time, remembers to shut the drapes before her naked dancing.

As the second episode of Private Practice commences, Naomi gets angry when Cooper hires a stripper for Sam. Pete, for his part, doesn't score points when he treats the stripper's medical problem. The Oceanside doctors join forces with Dr. Charlotte King at the hospital to help a sick baby.

Addison and Violet are wondering what the surprise is for Sam that Cooper and Pete are in on. Cooper worries when he finds out that Naomi is on her way over. Everyone runs to the window to watch Sam's surprise, Ginger the stripper, knock on his door.

Instead of enjoying the stripper, of course, Sam examines what looks to be like a rash on her rear end. Naomi walks in, ready to hang out with Addison and catch up, then sees what's going on and is disgusted. She later ignores Sam, upset that he let a stripper visit him.

Addison is mad at Pete for getting involved in the hiring of the stripper. He blames it on Cooper, naturally. Naomi grills Sam about the stripper. Good guy that he is, he tells her he did not sleep with her.

Later, Addison goes off on Pete when Ginger visits the clinic and Pete appears as though he is interested in having her around. As they relax after a long day at work, he assures her that he's not interested in a woman like Ginger, but wants a real woman. Definitely sparks here!

On the work front, Sam makes a house call to his patient, Dave, and finds him unconscious on the floor. Addison teams up with Cooper to help a sick baby named Emily.

Sam goes to the hospital to check on Dave and finds out that Charlotte has released him.

After looking at the test results, Addison sees that the parents didn't pass on a particular genetic mutation to Emily because they are not her parents. Charlotte goes to Naomi and Addison with some info.

Violet sits down Emily's parents to tell them that it's very possible their daughter was switched at birth and according to California law, they will have to give her back and take their biological child home instead.

Not surprisingly, this revelation comes as extremely devastating news to both Emily's parents and the parents of the other baby, both of whom find their lives turned upside down in a split second.

Sam figures out that Dave and his son are being poisoned by Dave's mother, and confronts the mother about poisoning her son, which she did to teach him a lesson for being an alcoholic, not intending to kill him.

To remedy the situation, Sam (Taye Diggs) holds an intervention with Dave and his family, telling Dave he's developed an allergy to alcohol, rather than exposing Dave's mom.

Addison takes Sarah's father to task when she learns he knew that Emily was sick and switched the babies' records on purpose. The police come to arrest him as the wife sits in disbelief.

Violet sits with Sarah's mom, who is now Emily's mom. She will be raising this baby alone, without her husband. The mother breaks down, knowing that it's possible Emily will die before she is five.

The babies are switched as two mothers grieve the loss of a child, while gaining a new one. They give each other tips on how to take care of their new babies as tears stream down their faces.

It's all about the magic. Do you believe in it? Can it be found? Does it even exist?

When Addison turns to Pete for help treating a newlywed couple who can't consummate their marriage (really, they can't, no matter how much they try, those gates are closed), she gets some interesting advice... and learns a lot about her fellow doctor in the process.
The girl is a virgin who has not yet had sex at 35. All that waiting and when she was finally ready to let it go, her "hoohah" didn't cooperate.

But Pete and Addison paired up with their respective backgrounds to help them get their own form of magic, despite their lack of faith that magic really exists. Meanwhile, Addison is seemingly working overtime to push Pete away, and to a degree, vice versa.

The scenes at the beginning, where Pete visits his late wife's grave at the urging of Violet in an attempt to move on were very telling. He clearly has not moved on. Maybe his experience with Addison on this case will go a long way to helping them find magic together.

As for Violet, she's not a very good psychiatrist... or at least she could use one herself.

She's listening to a message left by her ex - presumably months ago - over and over in her office. And despite her claims that she rules at her job, her latest helpful advice backfires when she talks a patient into asking for a divorce from his wife. Upon hearing his bold declaration, the wife starts to bleed from her nose uncontrollably. Just the reaction you want!

At the same time, Cooper has to treat some blue children. Literally! We're talking cornflower blue here people. At first, it's one, and he thinks it's the result of dental anesthesia. But when the four little blonde kids start to turn blue at once, it's beyond perplexing. In the end, he discovers they are poisoned from the fertilizer on their lawn and inhaled its toxic fumes. At least they're getting some fresh air!

Dell knows the best way to win affections of your love interest is through baked goods. Or so he thinks. Not sure it will work in this case, but Naomi sure does enjoy Dell's grandmother's cake, which he brings in. At least it is clear Dell wants to reach out to someone he cares about in his own way.

He's barking up the wrong tree, though, and she really lets him have it in the end. Naomi continues to wallow in her own misery and seems reluctant to try to reach out to Sam, who's got their teenage daughter staying at his pad this week. We don't see a lot from Mr. Bennett in this episode.

Maybe it's like Pete said, though. Nothing is perfect, and perhaps there is no magic. We just have to try to muddle through and make the best of each day, and choose as best we can to make our lives happy.

It's all about hope. Addison fights for a patient that no one believes in, and on a personal note, she really hopes people will RSVP to a gathering she planned at her home. Meanwhile, Cooper hopes he can help a boy going through some interesting times, while Violet is obsessed with her ex's new wife when she comes to the clinic.

Sam hopes his first TV spot promoting his book goes well. Dell, in a nice moment full of hope, shows Addison Naomi's Wall of Miracles, a board full of pictures of babies that beat the odds and survived. Pete meets a woman whose husband falls asleep throughout the day intermittently.

A pregnant woman, who can barely make it off the elevator, is helped by Sam and Addison. She goes into early labor and Addison gives her medicine to stop the contractions. That's when Charlotte shows up to claim her, with startling news that this patient - as yet unidentified by Oceanside - is straight out of the mental institution. Her name is Rebecca.

Later on, Rebecca's mom shows up with Charlotte to bring her back to the hospital. Addison gets lab results back that show Rebecca is lying and gives up on her. Sam stops everyone from taking Rebecca to give him a little more time to figure out what is wrong with her.

The doctors came up with a new theory as to why Rebecca feels the way she does, but Charlotte and the mother take off with her, bringing her back to the hospital. Rebecca and her mom find out she has had Crohn's disease all this time and is not suffering from mental illness.

Pete's patient, Sylvia, worries that husband Stan is having these episodes conveniently after he proposed to her. Pete ultimately figures out that Stan has actually been passing out due to too much sex. Some problem. In other news, Sylvia, who Pete is apparently well acquainted with, tells him Addison reminds her of his late wife.

Michael's parents go to Cooper, looking for their son, who has disappeared. He's in love, their son. Now he's gone. Cooper is also practicing a speech to give to the woman he's fallen for... unfortunately, his timing is bad as he Violet is still obsessing over the woman who took her man away.

Michael returns, bruised and beaten, after telling his crush, Brian, that he was in love with him. Michael is gay. Cooper tracks down Brian, the crush, at the skate park, to get to the bottom of it, then finds Michael, standing on top of a building and ready to jump. Thankfully he talks him through his first rejection and off the ledge.

Violet finds Cami's file, looking for closure, but Naomi catches her with the file and takes it away from her. Later Violet finds out that Cami comes to the clinic with a bladder infection because she's been having too much sex. But she's not the only one acting strangely on this day. Violet confronts Cami as she is leaving the clinic, and finds out that the reason she came was to scope her out.

Addison's get-together is ultimately a success, even though no one RSVPs. It goes well, everyone has fun Violet starts to believe that Cooper might have feelings for her, but he doesn't admit it. Addison tells Naomi she's upset for hiding the fact that there is likely no hope for her to have children but wants to hold out in hopes that something changes.

Ah the elevator… enter Addison and Pete. Friendly banter. Whoa, who is this guy, and what has he done with Dr. Wilder? Clearly this can’t be real… thunk. Addison topples out of bed, midway through the awkwardly sexy scene. Well, if they’re not going to put these two together in real time, I guess a dream will do for now.

At the morning meeting Pete tells Addison she looks hot and the whole room falls silent. He means flushed. Moving on, there is a healthy round of applause for what is to be Dell’s first solo pap smear today. Hilarious.

Naomi and Violet corner Addison about her Pete fantasies and Violet starts confessing her Bill Clinton fantasy. They talk about scratching the itch, so to speak, and Addison says she doesn’t do that kind of thing—leaving the other two speechless. They try to convince her later that self-pleasure would help her to steer her clear of Pete. Sam overhears and of course he tells Pete, who proceeds to give Addison a hard time about it all day at work.

The cases:

Maya and Ruby
Addison’s gets a phone call from Maya, and she’s hiding in the bathroom with her friend Ruby. She says she thinks she has gonorrhea. Dun dun dun… she’s 13 years old! And did Ruby really just say: “Gonorrhea. That’s the good STD right?” Seriously? Addison tries to find out what’s going on and because she can’t legally tell Naomi she confides in Cooper. He says Maya needs a friend. Addison needs to be what Maya’s parents can’t. Later, she tries to ask Naomi about Maya, but Naomi is clueless and very much in denial about her daughter—she thinks things are great. I wonder how many parents out there are in the same boat. Mayas tests are clear, but Addison finds out she is sleeping with multiple people and thinks condoms are 100 percent effective. She heads home, but then calls Addison again. At the house, Ruby is collapsed in a puddle of blood on the floor. Maya lied. Ruby had the problems the whole time. Turns out little Ruby has a late stage pregnancy. Maya keeps asking Addison what to do and then she pulls out her phone and says “Mommy?” Exactly, these are just little girls. Maya tells her mom she’s not doing what Ruby’s doing. Naomi is pissed at Addison and crying. Addison has to leave and talk to Ruby’s parents, but she asks Naomi to please have “the talk” with Maya.

Dr. Wilder meets Nicole, a famous runner. Her coach wants Pete to take a look at her, so he runs tests while Nicole runs on a treadmill and the machine starts going off. He tells her any physical exercise, from running too hard too walking to hard, could cause her to die. She’s clearly devastated. She ends up leaving, and when Pete heads to the track later to check on her she collapses during a race. Her coach says he and his wife have pretty much raised Nicole. Dr. King comes with some (herbs, maybe?) from Nicole’s bag and gives them to Pete. He tells her he did not prescribe them, and she says to figure it out anyway. Later, Pete asks Nicole what she took, and tells her he tells her she may never race again. He confronts the coach, who apparently shopped around for a second opinion, and ends up clocking him in the face.

Sam sees Beth, who has a serious cut after someone broke into her house and she fell into a glass table. She looks awfully shifty to me. Hmm… what else is going on here? She asks him about a drug for PTSD used on Katrina victims that alters the memory. Her husband is gone on business a lot and she doesn’t want to live in fear. Violet consults with her and Sam, and later stops by Beth’s house to make sure she is okay. She asks what more happened that night and Beth tells her how she was attacked and sexually abused. Her husband walks in and overhears everything (he didn’t know), and is extremely upset. He seems just a little crazy. The next day they both come in for a session with Violet and we find that the wife is actually worried about her husband dealing with the after effects of the situation, not her own self. He breaks down, and they hug it out.

Dell goes in to give his first “happy pap” and meets a cranky patient, who is on the phone. Really, who gets this done while on the phone? All her talking and comments on his age make him even more nervous and he fumbles around and drops the equipment. On his second attempt, Naomi is observing. This patient becomes unhealthily distracted by him because she thinks he’s “too cute.” He says, “No I’m ugly and I have moles in weird places.” Hysterical. He’s had some of the best lines tonight. Finally on his third try he gets shot down again. However, after he gives a ridiculous—but persuasive—speech about being born to do it, he gets to explore Lady Town after all.

Violet barely finishes telling Cooper that she is finally over Alan when Pap Smear Boy tells her Alan is in the lobby. Alan goes to shake hands with Cooper… denied! Violet can’t resist talking to him, so she runs after him. They finish talking. She tells Sam and Cooper they’re “friends” and having coffee. Cooper starts giving her the what-for, but Addison comes in to borrow him for a consult. She tries to justify the situation to Sam, but he doesn’t want to be involved either. That night Cooper goes to Violet’s with breakup-mending kit, but we find out that Alan is there. Poor Cooper, it was a real slap in the face. He hands her the kit and says he can’t do it anymore. Good for him. When Alan and Violet finally go on their coffee date she (stupidly) asks him to talk about Cami. The subject of baby fever comes up and Violet goes into orbit and leaves. She heads into Sam’s office and breaks down on him. Sam tells her that he’d like to think that pain is what forces us to grow. Cooper sees her leaning on Sam’s shoulder from the hallway, and walks away. It’s hard to tell if he’s really busted up about it, or just sticking to his guns.

Sam and Naomi sit down to discuss Maya. He thought Naomi had “the talk” with her, but she didn’t. They agree they need to do better as [divorced] parents. He says maybe they need to let it hurt a little more and stop trying to make it seem like they’re perfect…or buy a chastity belt. Chastity belt it is. So much for getting serious—will they ever quit pretending?

Violet goes to Cooper’s to confront him. He answers the door and she says, “Why didn’t you check on me?” He just stares at her, and she goes in. So much for detaching from her.

Back at Oceanside, Addison catches Pete on his way out. He brings up the fantasizing and says he’s not above a fantasy or two about her. Then he smiles that beautiful smile. Melt. She checks out his hand and finds out he hit someone, and starts getting all revved up comparing him to a cowboy or a gladiator. Then right when they’re about to kiss… she leaves! She takes off with her newfound fantasy image and heads home to tackle her showerhead and scratch the itch. Unfortunately, that leaves Pete alone in the office, and fully dressed. So much for wishful thinking.
