The ORIGINAL franchise series has lost a little bit or its initial luster, but it is still a good show. Look at almost anytime of the day and either Law and Order or Law and Order Special Victims Unit or Law and Order Criminal Intent is on some channel (probably USA).
But I am an original series guy and like the first 5 years of the shows. The original cast will never be duplicated. (I do love Jack McCoy who came on the show starting in Year 5). Year 3 will be remembered for the first pairing of Chris Noth as Det. Mike Logan and Jerry Orbach (RIP) as Lennie Briscoe. for many of us Lennie Briscoe will always be the heart of the show!
From the NBC site:
Law & Order , the longest running crime series and the second longest-running drama series in the history of American broadcast television, started it's 16th season on NBC in the fall of 2005. The brainchild of creator Dick Wolf, Law & Order is the most successful brand in the history of primetime television; the winner of the 1997 Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series; ties Cheers and M*A*S*H for the most consecutive best series nominations (eleven) and the longest-running drama series currently on American television. The series has also turned into one of entertainment’s preeminent brands using a distinct ripped from the headlines format, and has spawned the successful spinoffs Law & Order: Special Victims Unit , Law & Order: Criminal Intent , Crime & Punishment and Law & Order: Trial by Jury . Filmed entirely in and around New York City, this realistic yet fictional drama looks at crime and justice from a dual perspective. In the first half-hour, Detectives Joe Fontana (Dennis Farina) and Edward Green (Jesse L. Martin) investigate crimes and apprehend suspects under the supervision of their precinct lieutenant, Anita Van Buren (S. Epatha Merkerson). The focus shifts in the second half-hour to the criminal courts as Executive Assistant District Attorney Jack McCoy (Sam Waterston) and Assistant District Attorney Borgia (Parisse) work within a complicated justice system to prosecute the accused under the guidance of District Attorney Arthur Branch (Fred Dalton Thompson). Some cases may be simple, but most are multi-faceted. The investigations are challenging, prosecutions are complicated, and decisions about legal procedures and plea-bargaining are vexing. In the arduous and complex process of determining guilt and innocence, lives often hang in the balance. Law & Order has been renewed through 2006 and delivers some of the highest ratings on television, ranking fourth for any drama on any network among adults 18-49 for the past four full seasons. Season-to-date, the show remains a top-25 series among adults 18-49, a top-20 series in total viewers and one of the most upscale dramas on television. Law & Order was also television’s #5 drama in overall total viewers for the 2003-04 season with an average of 15.9 million viewers. The acclaimed crime drama has chased away more than 20 competing dramas from the Wednesday (10-11 p.m. ET) hour since moving to that time period in 1992-1993. In 2006, after nearly fourteen years of airing at 10:00 PM, the series was moved to 9:00 PM to make room for the new NBC series Heist . After only two weeks, NBC opted to return the show to it's 10:00 P.M. timeslot after the show fared poorly at 9:00 P.M

SVU is the best one of the bunch although I do watch them all.
It is amazing though with all the cast changes over the years L&O is still pretty good.

The season finale for SVU is on tonight and L&O Friday and next Monday for Criminal Intent.
Last nights Criminal Intent was pretty good. I wonder why NBC is showing the same episode two nights in a row?
I still can not decide what 'Criminal Intent' Cast I like the best, they both are pretty good and I am glad 'Logan' was brought back.

| I still cant get into Chris Noth (Logan) as a cop. He had stepped away for too long from L&O to pursue other jobs and... I dunno... I think I will always see him as Mr. Big (Sex and the City)

Kind of the same thing here. I adore Detectives Goren and Eames - they were made for each other, and Vincent D'Onofrio plays Goren really well. But I just don't like that they had to bring in Chris Noth (and whoever his partner is now) into Criminal Intent. I understand they had to do it because D'Onofrio suffered from exhaustion and needed time to rest, but the sparks don't fly for me with Chris Noth cast.
I also hate how every episode alternates between Goren/Eames and Noth/His partner. There was one episode about a girl disappearing on a New York trip that had all the detectives involved, and that's the kind of episodes that I would enjoy watching a lot more than alternating partners and storylines.

I wonder if Jack will ever be the D.A. in this show?
I wonder if Fred Thomas will be back next season? I just mention that as I hear rumours on the news he may decide to run for president.
This season finale was ok. Were the writers trying to make fun of that wacky judge from the Anna Nicole saga? It seemed like it. ha
Wow 17 years are complete now with this show and I have been following it since the first episode. That sure is long life for a TV show, especially now a days, not to mention all the cast changes over the years.
Has that Dick Wolf done anything else other than L%O? I guess I will go look that up.

I believe he created Conviction (starring former SVU star Stephanie March), but that failed and got cancelled by NBC after a couple of weeks.

| Special Victims Unit was the one I used to watch all the time. It has alot of the cast from Oz in it, and they all play thier parts well. The story line was great, and I don't think any other Law and Order will ever add up to the success of SVU.

The SVU season finale is on tonight.
Man last nights Criminal Intent season finale really sucked, I mean really sucked big time. Almost enough to turn me off watching during the week Chris Noth is in it.
Man that was bad.

| I've been watching the original L&O since the beginning and tuned in when SVU came about and because of Mariska Hargitay and Chris Meloni, it's become a permament fixture for me as well. I never did care for Criminal Intent because Vincent D'Onafrio was just too "off" for me to get into..
