I caught an episode of Dinner: Impossible yesterday, where chef Robert Irvine (I think that's his name) had to cook Elvis' favorite foods for 100 Elvis fans.  He had an assistant assigned to keep him true to the Southern cooking style Elvis loved, but one thing the assistant didn't seem to get him to change was the way he made the  banana pudding.  He broke up all the Nilla wafers and mixed them into the pudding while the assistant was explaining they were supposed to be arranged decoratively around the pudding, and then he popped it all in the oven.

Now, I've never had Southern-style banana pudding myself, but it seems to me it's probably done as the American style of pudding, that is, a creamy semisolid goop, whereas Irvine was probably making the English style which is boiled or steamed and is more cakelike.  Nevertheless, he put what looked like lumpy banana bread in front of Priscilla Presley and she rolled her eyes ecstatically as she tasted it.    I had to wonder if she wasn't just being polite for the cameras.

I like this show. You know it has to be stressful. Banana pudding, yeah, it's supposed to be like a goop with small chunks of banana in it and nilla wafers on the bottom and around the side.

Yeah, that's what I thought... I think the guests would have been disappointed to get what they would probably regard as some weird baked thing.

Yeah, I know I would have been disappointed. I would have looked at it, then looked at him, and said, "This is NOT banana pudding!" but I would have eaten it anyway. lol.

Yep, I would have probably eaten it anyway, then gone home and fixed myself the real thing. And then I'd go tell the Internet all about it ;)
